Paul Furniss is a pioneering Australian jazz saxophonist whose fearless approach to free jazz and improvisation has made him a towering figure in Australia’s creative music scene. Active since the 1960s, he is celebrated for his commanding, deeply expressive sound and his uncompromising commitment to spontaneous, collective music-making.

A sought-after performer and collaborator, Furniss has worked with many of the country’s leading improvisers and ensembles, bringing intensity, imagination, and authority to every performance. Equally influential as a teacher and mentor, he has inspired generations of musicians and remains a vital force in Australian jazz, championing adventurous, non-commercial music with passion and integrity.
