Bill Haesler OAM (1931–2026)

Bill Haesler OAM, one of Australia's most respected and influential figures in traditional jazz, passed away on 28 May 2026. A passionate advocate, historian, broadcaster, writer, record producer and washboard player, Bill dedicated more than seven decades to preserving and promoting classic jazz.

From his early days as a jazz enthusiast in Melbourne to his lifelong involvement with the Sydney jazz scene, Bill's contribution was extraordinary. He co-founded jazz clubs, led and performed with numerous bands, produced important recordings, presented acclaimed radio programs, and documented Australia's jazz heritage through his writing, research and discographical work.

Awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2005 for services to jazz, Bill remained a tireless supporter of the music and its community throughout his life. His knowledge, enthusiasm, generosity and friendship enriched generations of musicians and jazz lovers.

JazzLeague proudly acknowledges Bill's immense contribution to Australian jazz and honours the lasting legacy he leaves to musicians, enthusiasts and jazz organisations across the country.

Bill's legacy lives on in the music, recordings, archives and institutions he helped build, and in the countless people he inspired through his unwavering commitment to Australian jazz. He will be greatly missed by the Australian jazz community and by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
